A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:


1. Baby Loves Elvis

Baby Loves Elvis

Once again, TouJam’s DJ BO salutes The King with a series of fun events, complete with an Inferno gig on Saturday and brunches at The BREW and District.  Things kick off on Friday with the BABY ♥s ELVIS exhibition at Basement 6. This narrative Elvis-themed group art show mixes contemporary approaches, Asian aesthetics and classic American rock and roll motifs, for a show that is set in a fictional Elvis obsessed devotee affectionally called BABY. DJ BO will spin with perormance art and F&B pop-ups adding to the festivities.

2. Liao Fei: The Equator

Liao Fei: The Equator

Inspired by the duality of the equator, Liao Fei has crafted a couple of installations made of manufacturing material and waste from the rural-urban fringe where his studio is located.

3. Zheng Haozhong: Lee Cha

Zheng Haozhong: Lee Cha

Located on the dark side of the Bund, the ever-hip BANK kicks off 2016 with the first ever Shanghai solo exhibition by rising Shandong artist Zheng Haozhong. Li Cha transports a character from Zheng’s literary works into playful works. Opening is on January 16 from 4-6pm.

4. Materialised Sentiments

Materialised Sentiments

This intriguing group exhibition celebrates the role of artistic materials as a starting point for art. The show features a wide range of artists from around the world, including Yinka Shonibare MBE (pictured above), Chen Yufan, Chun Kwang Young, Sayaka Ishizuka, Pino Pinelli and Ren Ri. Opens on January 16 from 4-6pm.

5. Botero in China

Botero in China

This massive show features 96 works by the Colombian legend, Fernando Botero. A giant in figurative art who has been described as “the most Colombian of Colombian artists,” Botero has won numerous awards for his paintings and sculptures. The touring show has already wowed Beijing and will take over the esteemed China Art Palace.

6. The Drawing Hand

The Drawing Hand

Magda Danysz hosts this wide-ranging group exhibition devoted to the art of drawing. The show features contributions from international art stars (Liu Bolin, Ludo), hometown heroes (Zhu Ye) and Shanghai-based expats (Basmat Levin, Stas (pictured above)), plus much more. A companion show is currently taking place at Magda Daynsz Paris.
